  • GE FVK365R Bus Plug Skidded

GE FVK365R ready to ship. GE FVK365R ready to ship.

A few images of a GE FVK series 400-amp bus plug.  This bus plug has been reconditioned and tested.  All that is left is for it to be banded to the skid and picked up by the freight company for delivery to the customer.

This bus plug is for GE's obsolete FVK series plug-in bus duct.

The FVK series is one of GE's older series of busway.  The large handle on the front and side of this 400-amp FVK pictured above shows that it is an older model.  During our reconditioning process the plug was dis-assembled and all of the components were checked.  And, the bus plug is tested prior to shipment.

This fusible unit is max rated for 600-volts, 400-amps, and does not have a stab to connect to a neutral bar (3-wire).   We stock the 400-amp FVK for 240-volt, and with a fourth stab (4-wire) for a FVK bus duct system that has a neutral.

Often, customers ask us to box up the ship the bus plug ship UPS.  But, with the size and weight  (over 100 pounds / 45 kg) of this 400-amp bus plug, it has to ship on a skid by freight carrier.

  • Recondition Square D Custom I-Line Elbow

We recently reconditioned a Square D I-Line elbow. The section was giving bad readings when the customer meggered it and wanted to have the elbow reconditioned.

This particular elbow was customized to the customer's installation. It is also Square D’s older I-Line series. Square D still manufacturers the I-Line series, but only in the 225-amp to 600-amp sizes. At 800-amp and above the current line from Square D is the I-Line II.

Obtaining a replacement would be difficult, if not impossible.

The elbow came into the shop in rough shape. We disassembled the elbow as part of the reconditioning process. We checked the aluminum bus bar and insulation, including the end joint connectors for any signs of failure. On this elbow the bus bar was all in good shape. The ends were in good shape. The housing was in the worst shape having been up in the ceiling for decades.

We replaced the bus bar insulation and ground down the housing. We replaced all the rusted bolts in the elbow. After applying paint the elbow was ready for testing.

A few days after dropping it off the customer was able to pick up their reconditioned elbow and re-install into their busway system.

  • Identifying GE's Spectra SB and SL Bus Duct

The shiny new machine arrives. It is able to kick-out widgets in ten different configurations at unheard of speed. The guy-with-the-tie is excited about the new markets that are about to open as soon as this thing is running.

The machine is in place, and ready for power. The new GE Spectra bus plug ordered a few weeks ago is ready to be plugged into the busway. And after a few minutes on the lift it becomes clear...

    It doesn't fit.

    What ???

You might be able to "make" it fit (don't do that), but something is wrong.

Yes, it is. You have the wrong bus plug.

GE manufactured the Spectra bus duct in two flavors, the more common and current "SB" style, and a "low-amp", "SL" style. And, they are not interchangeable. A Spectra SL bus plug will not plug onto the Spectra SB busway, or vice-versa.

Oh, and the bus plugs look the same, except for the hanger setup on the back of the bus plug.

Customers have made this honest mistake many times. We have posted a short article with guidelines to identifying which GE Spectra series bus duct is in your plant. The article illustrates how to identify the series from the plant floor.

  • Square D PBQ Bus Plug Ready for Test

    Square D PBQ4640G Square D PBQ4640G

This Square D PBQ4640G (600-volt, 400-amp, 4-wire for the I-line I and II bus duct series) is at the end of the reconditioning process.  The next step will be to inspect and test. After the bus plug passes final inspection and test, he is ready to be shipped.

We are sometimes asked if a PBQ bus plug can be shipped in a box by UPS or FedEx. Weighing in at over 240 pounds and 42 inches long, it is too large.

The backside of the plug show off the PBQ's bolt-on style jaw pack and hanger setup.

  • GE Spectra Bus Plugs Side-By-Side

    GE-SB-BusPlugs-toShip_20160804

This customer ordered a variety of GE’s Spectra SB bus plugs from 60-amp to 1200-amp. We took the above photo during the staging process. The photo illustrates different sizes of the SB bus plugs in some of the different amperages.

SB462RG The small guy in the front is a 60-amp fusible bus plug.  The 30-amp and the 60-amp Spectra plugs usually come in this size.

SB464RGThe plugs next to and behind the 60-amp are 200-amp fusible bus plugs.

The five 200-amp plugs are what we refer to as an “automotive” style.  They are larger than the standard 200-amp bus plug found in the GE catalog.  They are longer by about six inches.  The functionality is the same.

    SB465RG

This square guy is a 400-amp fusible bus plug.  This plug has more heft to him, weighing in over 100 pounds.

SB466RGOn the table is a 600-amp fusible bus plug.

SB480KMGHiding in the back is a 1200-amp breaker-style Spectra SB bus plug.  This bus plug uses a circuit breaker for over-current protection, as compared to fuses with the other plugs in this order.

The customer’s system was configured with a neutral, so these bus plugs were all “four wire”, having four stabs to attach to the busway.

This photo provided a nice side-by-side look at some of the different GE Spectra SB bus plug sizes. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call. And, if you need a GE bus plug, we would love to help you with your next project.
